HE DIDN’T kiss her again.

Despite the fact that he had plenty of opportunity. They sat at a small secluded table in a far corner of the restaurant. The place was full, but none of the guests bothered them to hash over the day’s loss or ask for an autograph. They wouldn’t because they were angry and hurt by the possible move.Babe didn’t blame them and she might have felt the same if she hadn’t been too busy feeling Brodie’s thigh brush against hers whenever he shifted in his chair. Or his fingers play over hers when he reached to sample a bite of her steak. Or his mouth so close to her ear when he leaned over to ask her if she wanted more wine.

He didn’t kiss her, but he didn’t have to. She felt just as giddy when he simply stared at her mouth. Her nipples tingled as fiercely when he slid his arm around her shoulders. And when he licked a drop of wine that had dribbled down her finger, she all but came right then and there. The dark desire swimming in his intense green gaze told her he recognized her reaction, and he liked it.

By the time the evening drew to a close, she knew beyond a doubt that he wanted her, and that things truly had shifted beyond friendship. Last night had been about changing her mind. But tonight…Tonight was about the two of them and lots of kisses and s-e-x.

At least, that’s what she thought until she found herself standing in the doorway of her apartment. She watched him step onto the elevator at the end of the hallway. His parting “See ya” echoed in her head.

She’d obviously been wrong.

That’s what she told herself. But as she stomped around the apartment, shedding clothes and telling herself she didn’t need him, anyway, she couldn’t help but wonder why—why—he’d walked away. It wasn’t as if she hadn’t been more than receptive to his advances. She’d welcomed them.

She just hadn’t initiated any advances of her own.

The truth crystallized as she stared into the mirror at her reflection and noted the flush to her cheeks and the glitter in her gaze. She looked like a woman who wanted to have hot, wild sex.

But she didn’t act like one.

She hadn’t acted, period. She’d played it safe, waiting for his next move. Afraid to make a move of her own for fear that she would fail. The way she’d been doing her entire life.

Before she could stop herself, she reached for the phone and punched in Brodie’s cell number. It had been over an hour since he’d left and he was probably sound asleep and—

“Yeah?” his deep voice cut into her thoughts after the first ring.

“Can you come back?” she blurted. Without waiting for a reply, she rushed on, “I need you. I really need you.”

Silence followed, as if he were waiting for more and she felt as if she were back in the ninth grade at junior varsity volleyball tryouts.
